They say behind the success of every man is a woman. This seems to apply to Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison. For a number of years now he has relied on the executive skills of Safra Catz to help him run Oracle.

She was born in Israel and moved to the U.S. with her parents when she was six years old. Her father was a nuclear physicist and had taken a position at MIT. Catz finished her bachelor’s degree at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1983 and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1986.

Catz was an investment banker at Donald, Lufkin & Jenrette and became a Managing Director in 1997. Her focus was on software companies including clients like Oracle. She joined Oracle in 1999 in an executive role and is now President and CFO.

She has a talent for numbers and is a known number cruncher. Coupled with her management skills she has contributed significantly to Oracle’s success. Catz was able to cut down cost, reorganize and help grow the company.

Mergers and acquisitions is part of her responsibility and Catz has been a driving force in growing the company through acquisitions. Her investment banking skills has certainly been put to good use. Catz has also been well compensated. Her total compensation for 2010 was a jaw dropping $42 million.

With a compensation package like that, one would know that she is a one of a kind business executive.
